CHAPTER 16 The Pharisees and Sadducees Test Jesus

1 And having come forward, the Pharisees and Sadducees testing, asked him [²a sign ³from out of ⁴the ⁵heaven ¹to display] to them. 2 And he answering said to them, Evening having become, you say, Fair weather; [⁴is fiery red ¹for ²the ³heaven]. 3 And at morning, Today it will be distressful; [⁵is fiery red ¹for ⁴being gloomy ²the ³heaven]. Hypocrites, forasmuch as the face of the heaven you know to examine, but the signs of the times you are not able. 4 [³generation ¹A wicked ²adulterous ⁵a sign ⁴seeks anxiously]; and a sign shall not be given it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet. And leaving them behind, he went forth. 5 And [²having come ¹his disciples] unto the other side forgot [²bread loaves ¹to take]. 6 And Jesus said to them, See! and take heed from the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees! 7 And they were arguing among themselves, saying that, [²bread loaves ¹We did not take]. 8 And knowing, Jesus said to them, Why are you arguing among yourselves, O ones of little belief, that [²bread loaves ¹you did not take]? 9 Not yet do you comprehend, nor remember the five bread loaves of the five thousand, and how many hampers you took up? 10 Nor the seven bread loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 11 How do you not comprehend that it is not concerning bread I spoke to you to take heed from the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees? 12 Then they perceived that he did not say to take heed of the yeast of the bread loaf, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Jesus the Christ

13 [³having come ¹And ²Jesus] into the parts of Caesarea of Philippi asked his disciples, saying, Who [⁴me ¹do ³say ²men ⁸to be ⁵the ⁶son ⁷of man]? 14 And they said, Some John the Baptist, and others Elijah, and others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 15 He says to them, And you, who do you say me to be? 16 And answering Simon Peter said, You are the Christ, the son of the [²God ¹living]. 17 And responding Jesus said to him, Blessed are you Simon Bar Jonah; for flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my father, the one in the heavens. 18 And I say unto you, that you are Peter, and upon this, the rock, I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens; and whatever you should have bound upon the earth, it shall be have been bound in the heavens; and what ever you should have untied upon the earth, it shall have been untied in the heavens. 20 Then he gave orders to his disciples that not one shall say that he is Jesus the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 From then Jesus began to show to his disciples that it is necessary for him to go forth unto Jerusalem, and [²much ¹to suffer] from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and in the third day to be risen. 22 And [²taking him by himself ¹Peter] began reproaching to him, saying, Kindness to you O Lord, in no way will [²be ³to you ¹this]. 23 And having turned he said to Peter, Get away behind me, Satan! [²my obstacle ¹you are], for you do not think the things of God, but the things of men. 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any wants [²after ³me ¹to come], let him totally reject himself, and lift his cross, and follow me! 25 For who ever should want [²his life ¹to preserve], will lose it. But who ever should lose his life because of me, shall find it. 26 For what benefits a man if the [²world ¹entire] he should gain, but his soul should suffer loss? Or what [²will ⁴give ³a man ¹bargain] for his soul? 27 [⁵is about ¹For ²the ³son ⁴of man] to come in the glory of his father with his angels; and then he shall recompense each according to his actions. 28 Amen I say to you, there are some of the ones here standing, the ones who in no way shall taste death, until whenever they should behold the son of man coming in his kingdom.
